Calculation of Carbon footprint

Determining the carbon footprint is an excellent starting point for clear and complete information on a company’s dependence on fossil fuels and its impact on the environment.

A real carbon footprint can be calculated only if the requirements of calculation of greenhouse gases emissions expressed in CO2e are met, of the Guidelines for the Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.

TDR ENERGY S.R.L., by its team, can calculate your carbon footprint at the company, event , product or person level, by a correct methodology, which is based on a series of carbon management standards (ISO 14064- 14067and ISO- 14069) and also on Guides of the Intergovernmental Experts in Climate Changes for achieving the National Emission Inventories of Greenhouse Gases (IPCC 2006 Guides).

Calculation of carbon footprint helps the companies to define the strategies and to take the most appropriate decisions in each sector of activity, in order to participate in a more effective way to reduce the greenhouse gases emissions.

The certification offered by our experts will highlight the total amount of CO2e emitted by your company. The value specified in the certificate represents the level of greenhouse gases emissions that need to be reduced and/or cancelled so that the company to be “neutral”, respectively its carbon footprint becomes zero.

Reducing global warming should no longer be a choice, each company must undertake this responsibility, so that checking the carbon footprint is a big step in this direction.

Selecting the projects to reduce emissions

After calculating the carbon footprint, knowing the volume of emissions, you can invest then  by buying carbon credits in specific projects such as:

  • wind farms, solar or small hydropower plants  that replace  coal-fired power plants;
  • parabolic solar cooking devices;
  • energy efficiency projects;
  • producing and using biogas etc.

Greenhouse gases reduction credits obtained from such projects are validated by international bodies to demonstrate that emissions reductions meet the following conditions:

  • they are additional, excluding the reductions that would have occurred anyway unless the project was implemented;
  • they are permanent;
  • they are not counted twice, carbon leakage is avoided.

Depending on the standard used in project implementation, carbon credits are certified different, the most known standards being Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard (GS), Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

The VCS provides a robust global standard for voluntary GHG emissions reduction and validates and certifies the projects. It ensures that carbon offsets that businesses and consumers buy can be trusted and have real environmental benefits. The VCS program is managed by the VCS Association which is an independent, non-profit organization registered under Swiss law. The founding partners of the VCS are The Climate Group, the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

The Gold Standard represents a best practice methodology and a high quality carbon credit label for both Kyoto and voluntary markets. Only renewable energy and end-use efficiency projects can register for Gold Standard and all certified credits have undergone rigorous third party validation and verification.  All approved projects must be registered in the Gold Standard online registry, ensuring a transparent chain of custody, from issuance through to retirement.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) allows emission-reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. These CERs can be traded and sold, it be counted towards meeting Kyoto targets. Projects are qualified through a rigorous, public registration and issuance process which ensures emissions reductions are real, measurable, verifiable and additional to a ‘business as usual’ scenario.

Offsetting of Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint offset is a voluntary act which concerns companies, local communities or persons who are not subject to constraints of regulations on greenhouse gases emissions to purchase carbon credits to offset the emissions that are responsible for.

In most cases, due to the manufacturing processes or due to the activity done, the greenhouse gases emissions cannot be avoided and thus the carbon footprint of the companies cannot be reduced. In this situation, offsetting the emissions can be done only through a transparent process by which carbon credits are purchased from voluntary market, obtained from projects that generate real reductions of  greenhouse gases emissions validated by international bodies.
Thus, the net emissions of carbon dioxide equivalent can be equal to zero, the company being considered neutral in terms of carbon dioxide emissions.

Certification of neutrality is based on issuing a Certificate which will highlight the amount of CO2e emitted and reduction certificate series of greenhoue gases  cancelled.

We remain at your disposal by offering services related to partial or total offset of greenhouse gases emissions caused by the activity of your company.

EU Ecolabel

EU Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme that was created by the European Commission in order to help consumers identify more easily those products and services that have a reduced human health and environmental impacts.
Therefore, all manufacturers, importers, service providers or merchants who want to obtain this label, recognized throughout Europe, must meet certain environmental requirements such as: water and air quality, energy saving, soil protection, reduction of waste generated etc.
Experts, as a result of consultations at European level, design the granting criteria that need to be met by applying companies. The label itself is awarded to a wide range of products from different sectors, except food, beverages and medical products.
Our company meets the needs of companies that demand the eco-label, offering the following services:
  • A preliminary assessment on meeting the eligibility criteria as developed at Community level;
  • Drafting the documentation that will be assessed by the relevant Competent Body within Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests in order to obtain or re-new the EU Ecolabel

Environmental Consulting

The legislation currently in force, harmonized with EU requirements regarding the environmental protection, bounds every company to have an environmental responsible within the organization or to delegate this type of duty to a third party.
Therefore, the pressure put on companies is growing, as they are in great need for environmental consulting services, not only for obtaining approvals or permits, but also for basic activities, given that laws and environmental standards are becoming increasingly complicated and fines are becoming too high.

Accordingly, we support our customers by offering the following services:

  • Environmental balances, level 0.1 and 2
  • Site assessments
  • Notifications to competent authority
  • Presentation memorandums
  • Appropriate assessments
  • Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Environmental Reports
  • Annual environmental assessments regarding IPPC and non IPPC objectives
  • Waste audit and developing programs that prevent/reduce the amount of waste generated by their own activities
  • Dealing with environmental protection authorities on behalf of our clients
  • Waste management records.
